An unprecedented number of people in Britain are selling up and going to live abroad but the hard fact is that around a quarter of them return to the UK within a couple of years for a variety of reasons. Most people recognize that making a complete break from friends and familiar surroundings can be very difficult and sometimes circumstances can change unexpectedly but those who do return often find it extremely difficult to get back onto the UK housing ladder, particularly when house prices have risen beyond their ability to pay. The ideal of course would be to keep a toehold in the UK property market, but this isn't always possible for those who wish to give their families the best possible start in their new country.

Also it is very difficult to sell a house at all these days, let alone synchronise the date on which the sale is complete with the date on which the family moves abroad, and very often prospective emigres are faced with the choice of selling up well before they leave and moving into expensive rented accommodation in the meanwhile, or going off for their new life with very little money in the bank and an unsold house still on the market.
